It was brisk autumn evening at Father Clare Murphy stadium when the Lady Monarchs took the field for the 3rd annual Monarch Powder Puff game. The seniors (defending champions) entered the night as the big betting favorite. The freshman and juniors kicked the night off with a back-and-forth showdown. However, as the game heated up, the freshman struggled to get into the endzone, and the juniors found themselves advancing to the finals, while the freshman fell to the loser’s bracket.
The seniors and sophomores squared off next in what turned out to be a thriller. Both teams took turns trading scores in the first half of the game, but the seniors veteran leadership started to show in the second half. After a few costly turnovers, the seniors secured the game winning touchdown in the final minutes of the game. The sophomores were sent to battle for 3rd place with the freshman, while the seniors and juniors were set up to be the main event yet again.
The final rounds of the 2024 powder puff games were about to begin! Against all odds, the freshman were able to come back in the second half of their battle with the sophomores, and find a way to come out on top. With the freshman pulling off the big upset, everyone was wondering if the juniors could possibly do the same. All eyes in the packed stadium were on the on the Monarch Powder Puff classic that was about to start.
The seniors started off the game with the lead, predicting an easy win. But, the Juniors were not going down without a fight, and they ended the first half off in a tie. Not too long after the second half started, the juniors took the lead. The seniors started to panic, the game was getting intense, and the pressure was on. The referees were throwing flags, and the coaches were getting anxious, as both teams were trading touchdowns for what seemed like an hour. As the clock started to run down, the fans came alive and were on the edge of their seats. It was anyone’s game. When the clock finally stopped with 0’s across the board, the juniors and seniors found themselves going to overtime. For the next two overtime periods the coaches used every trick in their playbooks, but with less than a minute on the clock in the third overtime, the seniors pushed in what ended up being the game winning touchdown, defending their title and remaining Monarch Powder Puff Champions.
It was a tough game, but at the end of the day it wasn’t just about football, it was about the unity amongst our high school. We showed what it was like to be a Monarch and compete with class. It was the perfect ending to finish off Cabrini day of giving spirit week!
